UGC cancels University status of 123 Institutes

In a nationwide sweep the University Grants Commission has cancelled deemed university status to 123 educational institutions for their violation of tagging it to their title.

The action came in the wake of Supreme Court direction that the deemed universities tagging it their title would mislead the students as full fledged universities while they were only giving distance education courses only .

They include Geetham and Koneru Lakshmaiah in Visakhapatnam, Vignan foundation for Science -Guntur, Rasthriya Sanskrit Vidhyapeeth-Tirupati ,Sri Satya Institute of Higher learning -Anantapur,S R M institute of science and Technology, Indian Institute of Science -Bangalore and Vellore institute of Technology.

The UGC has also cancelled recognition to four institutions who were offering technical education through distance courses.
