Review : iSmart Shankar – Puri’s Mark Shankar

Ram Pothineni, Nidhhi Agerwal, and Nabha Natesh starrer ‘iSmart Shankar’ , directed by Puri Jagannadh, has hit the theaters today after having a massive promotion building activities across platforms. Since the film is coming massy director Puri ,expectations over the film is humongous. Let’s find out whether the film keeps up to the expectations.

Story: iSmart Shankar (Ram) is a local rowdy who does small settlements. He gets to an offer which turns his life around. That happens to be a killing contract. Quite Parallel to it, a love story and CBI investigations are going on by Arun (Sathyadev). How these seemingly irrelevant plots amalgamate and interconnected each other forms rest of the story.

Analysis: The first half of the film is mass by showcasing it’s never seen avatar of Ram. But when it comes to narrative becomes logic less. However, a major drawback for the first half are the conveniences Puri employs to move the story forward. While the core base of the story itself requires you to suspend disbelief, investing in these random illogical occurrences also become too much to handle. Not to mention all the uncomfortable rape jokes and dialogues objectifying Nabha’s character.

However, that’s not to say iSmart Shankar is boring because it is engaging in its own, strange way if you like mass films. And you even understand Puri is testing boundaries with the lines his lead character is allowed to cross. It remains to be seen if he maintains a clear head (pun intended) and pace both in the second half.

Performance: The Young and energetic actor Ram Pothineni delivers his best, he is terrific in his role. The audiences are shocked after watching his performance as angry young man , and this credit goes to Puri Jagannadh who brought new avatar of Ram Pothineni on the screen. Right from his toned body to his thumping performance, everything works well for him. Nidhhi Agerwal in the role of scientist researching on Hippocampus and memories, is good. Nabha Natesh grabs the attention of the audiences by her glamour. Sathaydev gets small role but he delivers his best. Sayaji Shinde, Punit Issar, Sathaydev, Deepak Mishra and others performed accordingly.

Technical: The music by Mani Sharma is quite appealing but BGM is outstanding. Cinematography by Raj Thota is superb. The visuals are stunning and a treat to the eyes. Editing by Junaid Siddiqui is ok. Action sequences are choreographed well and the Production value are top notch. Puri Jagnnadh has done superb job to narrate the story in an interesting way . The First half is entertaining and Interval block opens an interesting theme but second half goes flat. The climax Varanasi scenes is Good.

Plus points:

* Performance of Ram Pothineni
* Direction
* Entertainment
* Glamour of Nidhhi Agerwal and Nabha Natesh
* Interval Block

Minus Points:

* Routine Story
* Second Half

Verdict: ISmart Shankar is a typical commercial affair to attract mass audiences in consideration, backed by Puri Jagan’s trademark eccentricity.Ram nailed it with his angry young man performance and excellent dance moves. Unarguably this is his career best performance in mass role. Puri Jagan dialogues are a delight for youth and masses. He is back in form in ( mass ) dialogue writing. Of course, Family audience may find it difficult to adjust to his next level in this film. First half is entertaining , Interval opens an interesting theme but second half goes flat with very predictive revenge drama.You may give it shot for the weekend.
