Review : Ranarangam -Routine Gangster war fare

Sharwanand is known for choosing peculiar subjects and ensuring it succeeds. In this order, he has come up with a different subject in the form of “Ranarangam”.Let’s find how it has turned out to be for him and audiences.

Story: Deva (Sharwanand) is go-getting guy who doesn’t mind taking out of the route to earning money. He stars bootlegging liquor during the prohibition era. In doing so, he finds himself to be at the wrong side local MLA Simhachalam (Murali Sharma). While all this is happening, Deva also falls in love with Geetha (Kalyani Priyadarshan). How Deva becomes a big gangster who operates from a foreign location? Where is Geetha, and what do his foes do, is what the movie is all about?

Analysis:

There is something unintentionally funny about ‘Ranarangam’. Sharwanand is introduced as a feared, classy gangster who speaks very little. He can make even a Union Minister shiver with dread. But when he starts narrating his flashback, he says a line that can switch off your mood right away. “If websites’ ratings tell you how good a film is, back then, the rates of black tickets were the indicator.” Seriously? In which planet do dons talk like this? Another day, another scene. “Those were the days when KA Paul used to tour the world to promote world peace.” Lord! If your intention is to make the audience laugh, why not have him say, “Those were the days when I used to be a fan of Shakeela”? At least, many more would be able to relate to such a line.A few minutes into the film, the film gets into its mood. The story of the film revolves around one man. Deva, played by Sharwanand is seen in two different time-lapses, two different looks, and stories.

Without any doubt, Ranarangam is the weakest outing of Sharwanand in the recent past. He puts all the effort as he has done in his previous films, but in the end, there is not even in a single memorable scene to talk about regarding ‘acting’. It wasn’t the case in all the previous flicks where Sharwanand made sure that there were at least a couple of scenes to emote and impress. The exterior, styling and tough body language are neatly adapted, but the depth is missing. The weak direction further doesn’t help his cause as all he is left is mere poses. Guess, this is a film to forget and move on.

Characterisation Sharwa is seen in two different getups. His 25-year-old love story is well-loved. The 45-year-old is well into the role. Kalyani Priyadarshan looks beautiful. Kajal has not been used correctly. She was wasted a single song on the screen. Those who acted as Sharwa’s friends showed great appreciation. Murali Sharma’s performance is slightly different compared to previous films. Those who acted as Sharwa’s friends showed great performances. Murali Sharma’s performance is slightly different compared to previous films. The songs heard in the first part seem hush-hush. The background music was down to the scenes.

Technical Expertise:

Production designer Ravinder’s performance was impressive. He was able to effectively portray the 1995 theme on screen.

Considering the complexity of the story, the screenplay is brilliant. The screenplay is crisp and it keeps you intrigued to plot right through the film. We have to appreciate the director for keeping the movie crisp and short which suits it the best.

Cinematographer Divakar Mani has given some best shots that you can see in a Telugu cinema. The camera work is fantastic. It is one of the main assets of the film. Overall, it is a treat from Deva and Sudheer Varma

Plus Points:

* Story,Screen Play
* Sharwanand Acting
* Technical Values

Minus Points:

* Story backdrop
* Second Half

Verdict:- Like every film this film also has plus and minus but it hardly impresses a section of audiences. Director has failed to hook the audiences throughout as it sometime it feels like something is messy. You can give it a try for performances of the actors.
