Review : Fun ride – provided you apply breaks to your reasoning

The much awaited Sharukh Khan’s Chennai Express has finally arrived. Releasing as Eid attraction, the movie wastes no time in serious stuff and right from the very beginning, zooms ahead into comedy territory.

Getting into the story, Rahul (Sharukh Khan) loses both his parents in an accident in childhood itself. He grows up in the guardianship of his grandfather and grandmother in Mumbai. He toils away his teenage and youth in the sweet house business, managed by his family. But the twist in his life takes place when two of his cousins visit Mumbai for celebrating their grandfather’s 100th birthday. Both his cousins plan a trip for Goa along with Rahul. But when their grandfather dies on the 100th birthday, Rahul’s fate takes an altogether different turn.

To fulfil his grandpa’s last wish of immersing ashes in Rameshwaram, Rahul takes Chennai Express. In quite unexpected fashion, he meets Meena lochini (Deepika Padukone) in the train. From then on his life gets into deep problems due to Meena’s shocking background. What problems does Rahul face after that, What is Meena’s back ground? What more changes does both experience in their lives? Does both Rahul and Meena share the same journey or part ways in life?forms rest of the story.

Rahul has to fore-go all his joys and wishes due to his over possessive grandfather and has to get stuck himself to their sweet shop. After his grandpa’s death, he takes leave from his grandma and says that he want to explore and enjoy life. His grandmother blesses him and sends him to embark on his life journey, after immersing his grandpa’s ashes in Rameshwaram. But in the process, Rahul gets stuck with Meena and her don father Durgeshwara (Satyaraj) in a remote South Indian village Komban. To get out of Meena’s don father clutches, he has to face Meena’s would-be groom Tangabali (Nikitin Dheer) who is also a violent don. In this confusing milieu, Rahul makes all sorts of efforts to escape, which only fail but create comedy. First half runs pretty past with characters introduction and racy comedy. The movie loses pace a bit in the second half but director has taken care in quickly ending the movie, without dragging in the climax.

Except few opening scenes, Chennai Express movie is completely set in scenic south Indian rural and forest areas. Screen gets completely filled with actors wearing south Indian costumes lungis and traditional saris. This gives a refreshing look. It has got lots of south flavour, though it went overboard many times. There isn’t much in the story and director Rohit Shetty has completely concentrated on creating comedy from narration. Chennai Express is a 100% no-holds-barred comedy caper. Barring a few scenes, almost all scenes are narrated in comical way. Sharukh and Deepika haven’t got any challenging moments in the movie to prove their acting skills. They have just got into their roles and did their bit to create laughs. South actor Satyaraj appears as heroine father. Though he appears terrific, hasn’t got anything to do rather than stand and stare in a threatening way. South belle Priyamani sizzles in an item song.

Coming to music, though there aren’t any memorable numbers, music is pretty lively and maintains the pace of the movie. This movie sports high production values and makes for a cheerful viewing with rich visuals and energetic beats.

To conclude, Chennai Express is no way near what people expect from a star like Sharukh Khan and director like Rohit Shetty. But no one will complain, as it keeps them engaged and entertained for two and half hours. Two and a half hours of time pass on a Eid weekend isn’t a bad package!
